HL7 Integration - Good News for Hospitals & Health Care IT Suppliers

HL7 stands for Health Level 7. It's a health care communication protocol that's in service in many countries worldwide. In the US, health care organizations also deal with regulatory standards known as HIPAA, which includes regulations for information exchange based on EDI (for the most part).

IT companies that supply health care applications now have the additional worry of having to comply with HL7. The only problem is that there are already many versions in use. Most versions are 2.1 up to and including 2.7 and the latest 3.0 version.  But health care applications are written to support one specific version.

So what happens when a number of health care system providers all approach a hospital, and they're all complying with different versions of HL7?

That's where a code-free integration solution like iBOLT (which now has an optimized adaptor for HL7) can help by translating one version to another quickly and efficiently:

  1. The Hospitals - With iBOLT they can better integrate the various health care applications they already have - to ensure optimal resource allocation for patients as they come through the door. (There are an enormous range of apps in a health care institution that need to be synchronized and integrated - from the logistics of bed provision to patient food supply, specialist medical system, laboratory testing systems, and more.)
  2. The Health Care IT System Providers - If they've already OEM'd the iBOLT integration solution into their application they stand a better chance of winning the IT project - as they're application is already fully compatible with all other HL7 standards the hospital may be dealing with.

You can find out more by downloading the White Paper: 'Improving HL7 Integration for Healthcare Providers'.

Here's a screen shot of iBOLT in action translating one version of HL7 data (Source - on the left side of the screen) to another version (Destination - on the right side of the screen).

The iBOLT system is fast, powerful and very intuitive. It offers the following capabilities for the HL7 environment:

  • Translation from non-supported HL7 apps to supported HL7 apps
  • From HL7 version 2.x to 2.y
  • From whatever API to HL7
  • From every HL7 version to an API
  • From HL7 to Magic Software connectors (SAP, java, .NET, Portal etc) and vice versa..
  • All HL7 supported apps are interchangeable - also with ERP, CRM systems etc..

iBOLT seems like a nifty tool. However, it is hard to get past rather big "misstatements" like "HIPAA is a US equivalent of HL7". HIPAA has little to do with HL7, it's an information privacy standard, and sometimes also used to refer to a specific EDI format used for insurance claims processing. HL7 standard was developed and is widely utilized in US...

Thanks for the information Alex. I've updated the post.

Seems like a nice offer. Is the iBolt software Open Source or free like other hl7 integration engines? I couldn't tell in the website.

Also, when you say that now it has an adaptor for HL7, that means its an addon and not its primary purpose right?

Thanks for your time.

Good post Sam.

Situations and workflows in hospitals can include hundreds of data-sources/application and being able to centraly integrate/monitor/update/transform the messages is crucial and sometimes complete projects fail or make the users very frustrated from the extra manual work they need to do.

It also creates overall SLA issues to the hospital as a service provider with poor patient experience moving between the different departments (while "getting the service").

Hi Oscar,

iBOLT is not Open Source as it provides integration capabilities on a much larger scale than only HL7, including appications and systems such as SAP, Salesforce.com, Lotus Notes, JD Edwards, IBM i, and more.

iBOLT is a highly affordable platform for organizations with current and future requirements for integration of any sort and on any scale. Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Sam.

Thanks for getting back to me Sam. Greatly appreciated, and yes you answered my question.

But, the comment that because it is not open source, it can support the other applications you mention is a bit off I think though.

Something that is Open Source doesn't necessarily make it incompatible with proprietary or large scale systems, and the same with going the other way. Just because something *isn't* open source doesn't mean that it will be able to support these large scale or proprietary systems. I think it really is up to the goal of the software and not its licensing.

Do you guys have demos or videos available for on the iBolt software using HL7? I found a couple others but not one demonstrating the HL7 capabilities.

Thanks for your time again!
regards.

BTW, are you on Twitter? I saw the twitter link at the top but that just took me to actually tweet this article. I wanted to follow you, you have some good articles here.

Hi Oscar.

You're right of course. The capacity and capability of a product is irrelevant to its commercial model.

My intention was really to differentiate iBOLT from "other HL7 integration engines" which suggest that such engines are exclusively for HL7.

As for twitter, look for us under 'MagicSoftware' - be glad to have you on board! Be well.

We are also now working on new videos demonstrating iBOLT's latest capabilities including HL7 - so stay tuned :-)

Ah, great, I got it. Yeah I found your twitter account shortly after my post. I think I'm already following. I look forward to checking out new videos as they come out.
Thanks again for posting back and Good Luck!
